Johnny Depp is Barnabas Collins in upcoming Dark Shadows Masterpiece!

Johnny Depp as the Vampire Barnabas Collins

Actually, he’s the topic of conversation today because of his current film endeavor.   Remember Dark Shadows??  Well, in case you haven’t heard, there is soon to be a revival of this delightfully dark masterpiece.   And guess who’s playing the vampire Barnabas Collins?  That’s right compadres!  It’s Johnny Depp!  And at the helm?  One Mr. Tim Burton!

He’s been working with the eccentric cinema genius Burton since 1994’s Edward Scissorhands, and the pair obviously have a great respect for one another’s work, and have a camaraderie that, when between a director and actor, is pure magic. Edward Scissorhands, his creepily sweet mad scientist creation, is now a cult classic.  His Willy Wonka character helped Charlie and the Chocolate Factory earn $474 million, while his four Pirates of the Caribbean films have earned nearly $3 billion and Alice in Wonderland earned a billion all by itself.

As you die-hard fans know, both Burton and Depp are not what you’d call reluctant to mess with the pop-culture past. Check out this video below, as Depp elaborates:

“We’re changing it a little bit,” Burton told MTV last fall. “I wouldn’t do it if it felt like it was just doing the same thing. For me, it’s about trying to go back to the original drawings and kind of capture that spirit a little bit more of what the drawings are. It feels different even though it’s a similar story, but we’re kind of expanding it a bit.”

Among other things, Johnny Depp is known for his penchant for dark, sinister and often eccentric roles, this new one no exception.  You’ve seen him in Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Donnie Brasco, Blow, Who’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Willy Wonka, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, and many more.  There’s actually way too many to list!  And we’ve even been fortunate enough to have done some amazing figures based on characters he’s played in the past, such as Captain Jack Sparrow and the Mad Hatter.   We can’t wait to be inspired by Burton and Depp’s latest incarnations!

Up next for Depp?  The Rum Diary, which is an adaptation of a  Hunter S. Thompson book.  He begins filming this fall! Keep your eyes peeled!
