When Print Comes Alive

The reports that “graphic novels” are going strong on the Barnes and Noble best selling list, especially those driven by their television expressions. Part of the great comic revival – can we really call it a revival…perhaps more an ascendance in new media – involves the discovery of the source material which thousands of readers would never have found or even heard of. Ipad apps and the new retina display, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, are giving a brilliant HD birth to print comics, and thanks to the dramatic and majestic cable treatments graphic novel comics like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead are finding themselves in new hands.

Of course it is a double edged sword as purists encounter the thing they love under new commercial forces, but perhaps the new attention and media bring out avenues for invention and creativity as artists are drawn to the combination of old and new forms.
