Betsy McCall® Collection
To the delight of mothers and daughters everywhere, Betsy debuted on the cover
of McCall's Magazine in May 1951. In 1957, Betsy jumped from the pages of
McCall's Magazine into the active hands of her loyal fans as an 8-inch hard
plastic doll. Produced by the American Character Doll Company in conjunction
with McCall's this Betsy was an instant hit as a playtime friend! Based on his
endearing love for Betsy, Robert Tonner reintroduced the whimsical little tyke
as a new 14" sculpt in 1996.

29" BETSY McCALL®
Betsy McCall's character is, without a doubt, one of the most enduring and
timeless ever created. Now, for the first time, Robert Tonner has brought back
one of the most rare and delightful dolls from the Betsy McCall® Archive.
Introducing 29" Betsy, available as a super-sized tyke who is full of fun and
imagination! 29" Betsy is fully strung vinyl with inset blinking eyes; rooted
saran hair; and articulation at the neck, shoulder, waist, hip and ankle. She's
the perfect playmate!
Robert Tonner's 14" Betsy McCall® is a 14-inch, vinyl doll with an extensive,
fun wardrobe. Betsy was Robert's first venture into vinyl production. As a
result, the doll was under watchful eye for development issues as production
continued. In 1998, it was discovered that dolls made between 1996 and 1998
were strung with a rubber elastic band. This rubber band reacted with the metal
hooks used to secure the parts in the stringing process. Over time, the rubber
band will break, causing "Betsy-discombobulitis" (an affectionate term created
by the Betsy fans who simply wouldn't give up on this sweet little tyke). Since
1998, all Betsy dolls are strung with wrapped elastic cording. Tonner Doll
Company will continue to support "Betsy-discombobulitis" until every Betsy is
happy once again. Retailers may guide collectors directly to the Tonner Doll
Hospital for support, or they may forward the doll to the company on behalf of
the collector.
8" Betsy McCall® is an 8-inch, hard plastic doll with synthetic mohair wig and
an extensive, fun wardrobe. Her sculpt is based on the original American
Character sculpts...but the same molds are not used. Robert studied the
original to better engineer away the flaws associated with the 1957 toy to
create a collectible for the new millennium. Since the doll's debut in early
2000, collectors have been drawn very closely to the popularly priced
collectible as an outstanding representation of the vintage Betsy, and as one of
the finest and most unique examples of 8-inch hard plastic dolls today.
Many of 8" Tiny Betsy's clothing are based on original Betsy McCall® paperdoll
clothes; each with an all-American charm that celebrates over 50 years of Betsy!
Hair- 8" Betsy is wigged with synthetic mohair, and newer wigs styled with
high-quality saran fiber. The following hair colors have been used:
- Golden Blonde - as in 2004's Rapunzel
- Pale Blonde - typically rare for Betsy, because a blonde Betsy is 'Barbara
McCall', Betsy's look alike cousin!
- Brunette (or Brown) - the standard brunette is a classic brown.
- Tosca - basic redhead.
- Auburn - dark red
- Copper Penny - light copper red
- Raven - black
14" Betsy is offered in both wigged kenekalon styles and rooted saran hair in brunette, pale blonde (Barbara) and dark
brown (Dru). For more information on saran hair rooting, see the Tyler
Wentworth hair details.
29" Betsy has rooted saran hair in brunette, wheat blonde and redhead.
For more information on saran hair rooting, see the Tyler Wentworth hair
details.
