IDEX/ToyFair 2008: News From the Industry

A New Type of Basic Fashion Doll Emerges

IDEX

More than 150 doll enthusiasts (including the Lennon Sisters - see Janet & Kathy with Robert - left) joined Robert for his “Ultra Basic” breakfast at IDEX on Sunday morning. Lining up more than an hour before the doors opened in the hopes of catching a glimpse of what was to come, collectors patiently waited to learn the identity of the ultra top-secret souvenir doll.

Once the doors opened, white wrapped boxes and matching bunches of balloons greeted guests at every table. At each place setting was what collectors had been anticipating for months—the Ultra-Basic® Tyler Wentworth®, featuring the brand new Tyler sculpt and a very limited brunette hair color!

The event was officially kicked off with breakfast—of course, followed by Robert’s presentation of the 2008 Tonner and Effanbee collections. Guests received a Tonner 2008/2009 calendar, an outfit for their new Ultra-Basic® dolls and some lucky collectors walked away with door prizes and raffle prizes too!

We are thrilled to announce that the ultra-popular, Ultra-Basic® Tyler Wentworth® is here to stay and will be widely released in an assortment of new hair colors later this March (see below). The first installment of our Ultra-Basic® collection features the brand new Tyler Wentworth® sculpt with brunette hair on the ultra-articulated bendy-wrist body, which features 13 points of articulation. The ultra-limited brunette version offered at IDEX represents the first and only Tyler head pulled from the master mold; the regularly issued Tyler dolls will be slightly different as they are from the production molds.

About Ultra-Basic®: Debuting at IDEX 2008, Ultra-Basic® Tyler Wentworth® was an immediate hit with doll enthusiasts. Designed to give the collector a high quality doll with a more comfortable price, Ultra-Basics® come dressed in a basic knit bodysuit with clear elastic straps and are just waiting to slip into a fabulous new wardrobe!

The Ultra-Basic® collection will be available on www.tonnercompanystore.com AND at the Tonner Company Store at 14 Hurley Avenue in Hurley, New York STARTING MARCH 12, 2008! Look for more familiar favorites added later this year! Log on or stop in for details!!

And be sure to check out the pics of the gorgeous one-of-a-kind Sydney and life-size couture gown for the fashion runway for IDEX's charity event in support of Save the Children.  Special thanks to Marcia Friend and Chris Parker, IDEX for the images!

TOYFAIR

Toy Fair is always an incredibly exciting experience. Not only is it a great opportunity for us to meet with our licensing agents from our various film and pop culture properties, but we never know who we might meet or what opportunity may come our way. Some of our hottest licensed properties began at Toy Fair.

The magic of Toy Fair begins many months in advance when we plan our booth size, typically a mammoth 20’ x 40’, displaying our most exciting properties. Once we decide on which of our properties we will highlight, everything else falls into place. Some of our dolls and TCF’s even debut at Toy Fair!

Rhett Butler made his first appearance standing next to his beloved Scarlett. Perfectly posed, he was ready to be seen by everyone passing through our booth. Many retailers had the opportunity to be among the first to take photographs of him.

Kreacher™ from Harry Potter also made his debut at this year’s Toy Fair. While no photography was allowed, many fans and retailers caught the first glimpse of him. Startled by his likeness to the “real” Kreacher™, many stood and stared just speechless.

Since Toy Fair is a trade show, many of our collectors cannot experience it for themselves. Luckily, many attendees take photos and post reviews online for everyone to enjoy.

BACKSTAGE PASS: Design Room Scoop

Ball-Jointed Beauty

We have some exciting new dolls and doll concepts coming out of the design room this year! Robert recently unveiled his prototype, resin, ball-jointed Tyler Wentworth® featuring Tyler’s brand new face sculpt at IDEX in Orlando and Toy Fair in New York. Anyone who saw her stopped to take a closer look.

Her luminous skin and beautifully delicate hands make her one of the hottest new Tonner dolls this year. The top of her head is held on magnetically, so her eyes can even be changed. Since her body is the same size as our other traditional 16” fashion dolls, she will have endless clothing options.

Resin Tyler will come with a selection of three wigs in various colors and styles. There are rumors swirling around the design room that there are customizable accessories coming. This new Tyler Wentworth® has endless possibilities for play or to personalize for your very own one-of-a-kind.

She is in the early stages of development, so I will keep digging for more Tyler scoop.

SPECIAL REPORT: A Renaissance for Tyler
Tonner Re-invents Tyler into a Completely New Woman

It’s the end of an era. Well, sort of… If you haven’t already heard, Tyler Wentworth®, the fashion designer we know and love has grown up and had a bit of a “face lift.” Thanks to Robert Tonner’s eye for beauty, coupled with his artistic talent, Tyler has a brand new look and a fresh perspective on her world-famous fashion collection.

Robert admits, “It was time to shake things up a bit in Tyler’s world. With the arrival of the edgy Jeremy Voss and the triumphant return of Aunt Regina, Tyler needed a change.”

The new Tyler Wentworth® made her debut, “in the plastic,” at IDEX in Orlando in January; a limited brunette version was issued to attendees at a special event. Fans can get their hands on the newest Tyler Wentworth® as an Ultra-Basic™ available in three NEW hair colors (raven, redhead & blonde) starting in March.

Visit www.tonnercompanystore.com or call 845-339-2960 for more information. While the original face of Tyler is gone, she will surely not be forgotten.

TONNERDIRECT REPORT: Because We Promised You a Tonner
VOLDEMORT Tonner Character Figure™ Incidents on the Rise!

Reports coming in from across the country regarding the purchase and ownership of the LORD VOLDEMORT TCF demonstrate an overwhelming sense of both fear and satisfaction. “He’s creepy. Really creepy,” one purchaser said.

Calls to TONNERDirect, the exclusive retailer of the LORD VOLDEMORT TCF character figure, were not returned in time for this report, but one employee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said, “Yeah, he’s pretty creepy!” I went – I mean HE went further to say, “None of the reports of customers waking to the sounds of the LORD VOLDEMORT character figure allegedly trying to vanquish or destroy other figures in their collection have been substantiated.”

Other unconfirmed claims include the morning discovery of a LORD VOLDEMORT TCF not being in the same place as it was the night before; bookshelves, display cabinets, and curio tables being found in disarray; and several head injuries were reported when unsuspecting TCF owners enter a room in the midst of a heated battle between HARRY POTTER and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

The LORD VOLDEMORT Tonner Character Figure looms at almost 19” tall and is a likeness of the character as played by Ralph Fiennes in the popular HARRY POTTER film series. Visit www.tonnerdirect.com if you dare to own “You-Know-Who!”

OK...that was an EASY one! It's time to kick up the challenge this month.  In the early 90s, Robert Tonner was working with new proportions in his 16.5" multiple jointed porcelain models.  But at LE50 and $1500 each, it presented a bit of a purchasing barrier to many doll collectors.  Since he had already begun working in vinyl in the early 90s, Robert Tonner wanted to create a mannequin-style fashion doll that would exhibit simple, elegant clothing styled in exceptional fabrics.  His extensive experience as a sportswear designer while head of Bill Blass' Blassport gave him a unique vision in terms of fashion doll styling. This, paired with his own sculpting talents, created a doll purely unique in its look and feel.  His release of the 19" Vinyl American Models™ in 1994 gave collectors a new option in fashion dolls.  The series was an instant hit with both Tonner aficionados and with fashion doll lovers.  Tonner followed up this series with a new proportion and head sculpt in 2005 - the 22" American Models towered over their predecessors, and each offered a new facet in fashion doll artistry.

Robert Tonner's 19" Vinyl American Models Series introduced fashion doll collectors to new heights in fashion doll artistry.  Can you name 5 completely different Tonner fashion doll body proportion styles? Forget the HINT this time...you can't use the American Models in your answer.  But we will tell you to refer to this example: two different child body proportion styles would be 14" Betsy and 8" Betsy (remember that this question does not apply to child doll styles, though).  The various incarnations of the 16" Tyler body style (Original, BA, AR, BW, Geisha/NYCB Bust, etc.) cannot be used to answer this question.  GOOD LUCK!

Email your answers to help@tonnerdoll.com with "Monthly Challenge" in the subject line - get your answers right, and you will be eligible to win a FREE Tonner American Model!!! - check for the answers in the next Newsletter!

We don’t just sell dolls, we also fix them. Now that the Doll Hospital is fully operational, the response has been unbelievable!! I have had the privilege of seeing all sorts of new patients entering the O.R. including antique bisque, composition cuties from the 30’s and 40’s and a favorite of mine, the wonderful hard plastics of the 1950’s. Refurbishing these well-loved memories of someone’s childhood has been my passion and with the new facility, this doll doctor is truly in her glory! Remember; if you have a beloved doll that is beginning to show her age, just give us a call for an estimate.

Thanks to the many requests we received, we are now selling our BW (bendy wrist) super articulated bodies to any and all of our collectors who wish to upgrade their older 16” fashion dolls to the newest fully articulated versions with bendy wrists and even convertible feet! Feel free to give us a call to arrange a doll hospital visit, make a purchase, buy a BW body, or to order! And yes—do have a few of our gorgeous “Grand Opening” special dolls left, so please don’t wait if this beautiful brunette, in her stunning purple gown, is on your list. She is a limited edition of only 300 pieces and celebrates the Grand Opening of Tonner’s first and only retail store.
